THE GOVERNOR I DESERVEby Yakubu Abdullahi Yakubu

Adamawa State is in the eye of a storm. It's a place where everybody wants to be governor or where everybody has his person that should be the governor. It's a rat race that only one person will be sworn into office in about 400 days. Most people say it's the most difficult job - no rest, no peace of mind, no thanks, no true friends. If so, then why is everybody so interested in carrying this heavy burden?

Beyond rhetorics, if given the opportunity I would like to be the governor of Adamawa State for the sake of the people. But that's not my turf. There's a process to reach that point. It's a journey where you have many rivers to cross. Many are pushed into the river and get drowned, even before reaching the first bridge.

The question is 'Who can be governor of Adamawa State?' You can be if, according to the Nigerian Constitution, you are a Nigerian citizen by birth,
at least 35 years old, a member of a registered political party sponsored by that party, and educated to at least School Certificate level or its equivalent.

By this token, you don't need to be special to be governor. Try to be a doctor or pharmacist or engineer or lawyer and some few other professional jobs and you will know that it is not for all-comers. All the same, as simple as the requirements for governor are, it takes only a man of Hercules' strength to make it.

One funny criterion being floated recently is that a person vying for governor must be a 'grassroots politician'. Another one is 'empowerment'. Where's that coming from? What or who is a grassroots politician? I don't know. But what I know is a grassroots politician should be that politician based in the ward or local government area, living and working solely for his people. One cannot be in his Karewa or Dougirei or Asokoro or Maitama residence and claim to be a grassroots politician. Looking at the bigger picture, the whole concept or parlance is a ruse.

Since the inception of democratic rule, Adamawa has become a land of feud from the land of beauty. From election cycle to election cycle, it's feud after feud. We are always waiting for four years or eight years to exact our revenge, pour out all our venom and decapitate the man in government house because he is not our choice. When are we going to have the choice of 100 per cent of the people who are of multiple political, ethnic and religious backgrounds? Not in this world.

Who is the governor I deserve? It's me. Or myself. Or I. Since that's not possible in a long time, let me wait for the best in character, a person that is intellectual, gregarious, respectful, God-fearing law-abiding, calm and collected.
