Brief History of Fulani People

Image
The origins of the Fulani people are unclear and various theories have been postulated. As a nomadic herding people, they have moved through and among many other cultures. Skutsch notes that there oral histories point toward a start in Jordan or farther east, but also their language comes from the Senegambian region. He concludes that the modern Fulani people began in the northern Senegambian region[1] Walter Rodney in his book “The History of the Upper Guinea Coast”, argues that Fulbe are originally from North Africa and they conquered the Foota Djallon region led by the Fulani Koli Tenguella. The ethnogenesis of the Fulani people may have begun as a result of interactions between an ancient West African population and North African populations such as Berbers or Egyptians.[1] Their West African roots may be in and around the valley of Senegal River.[2] They likely reflect a genetic intermix of people with West African, North African, and Arabian origins, and have been a part of many

TIDDO YO DADDO ROAD TO THE FINAL CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS. SECOND BIRTHDAY ANNIVERSARY OF THE ADHOC COMMITTEE FOR THE CENTENARY CELEBRATION, TYD ALUMNI ASSOCIATION, GMMC YOLA ON 16TH NOVEMBER 2021. Behold! The second birthday anniversary of the Adhoc Committee, a creation of the Congress of the TYD National Alumni Association of the great school, General Murtala Muhammad College, GMMC Yola comes up on Tuesday the 16th of November, 2021. Like the twinkle of the eyes, two years has rolled by stealthly,  barely noticed. Even though with flurry of Adhoc Committee's activities, strategies and planning to beat the Centenary year Celebration timelines. A near miraculous or impossible assignment to achieve, going by standards set for preparations for such celebration in other climes. An example I often refer to was the Golden Jubilee celebration of the Federal Government College Sokoto. Alumni Association members of the FGCS started preparations for their 50 years' Golden Jubilee celebr

ATTENTION: PHASE TWO OF THE 100 YEARS CELEBRATION. The Phase two of the centenary celebration of the iconic school, (for the benefit of the elder alumni), the former Elementary School,  the Middle School, the Provincial Secondary School, PSS Yola, then the Government Secondary School, GSS Yola and now General Murtala Muhammad College, GMMC Yola, which will be the crowning series of activities to mark the 100 years of the great school, is scheduled to be held in the last week of December, 2021. The Congress fixed the December period by voting during the general meeting held in the college in mid 2021. That decision cancelled AD-HOC suggestions for an earlier date for the celebration. The Repeat of 1966, Drums of war. 🥁 ⚔️ part II

THE REPEAT OF 1966, DRUMS OF WAR. PART TWO. THE JOURNEY FROM LAGOS TO GAMBE VILLAGE, DECEMBER 1966. My narrative, the 'The repeat of 1966, drums of war' in my earlier post was the beginning of the scenario that led to the fracticidal, brutal and deadly Nigerian civil war, as a consequence of the crisis which ensued  after the gruesome coup de tat of the  15th January 1966, where some majority Igbo military officers spear headed the controversial coup that eliminated majority political and senior military officers from the Northern and Western Regions of Nigeria without a loss of life of any from the Igbo Eastern Nigeria. Lagos was as ever a bustling city and it remained so in spite of the monumental episode, the military coup that took place less than two months earlier, when I arrived Lagos to resume studies at Federal Science School, FSS Lagos. It appeared people in Lagos were oblivious of the happenings in the country, even though the main theater of action of the coup de t

The fears expressed on the probable return to the 1966 scenario of doom and uncertainties hanging in the atmosphere, the absence of trust and confidence in the next person with you or near you if he happened not to be from your region or your tribe or religious persuasion. In 1966 the atmosphere was charged and people were looking over their shoulders in order not to miss any happenings. First, I was in Gambe Village on the 15th of January when the sudden and unexpected news of the killing of the Sardauna Sokoto, the Premier of the Northern Region was announced over the Radio Kaduna. The news came with mixed reactions from the population who were just coming out of the just concluded general elections 1964, in the country. Many people who belong to the ruling NPC of Sardauna/Tafawa Balewa party were aggrieved on the killing of the Premier of the Northern Region and his colleague, the Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and military officers of mostly northern extraction while me
