APC NEEDS SUPERIOR STRATEGY TO RETURN TO POWER IN 2027
By Umar Ardo, Ph.D
That the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) may face a serious threat of electoral defeat in 2027 is no longer a distant speculation; it is an emerging political reality! The fundamental error of the APC’s current strategy is that, instead of it to look at how low its popularity is and work towards beefing it up, it is concentrating on the weakness of the opposition and working fervently to weaken it even further. This is a poor political calculus! In other words, if President Tinubu concentrates in raising his popularity, then automatically he will be weakening the popularity base of the opposition. Conversely, if he focuses on weakening the opposition, as he seems to be doing now, then automatically he will only be weakening his popularity and raising their own. And once the incumbent is unpopular any focused opposition will defeat it. The last Senegal election is a good example. This is what is currently playing out in Nigeria.
Given this reality, the political equation has fundamentally changed. The burden now shifts to the APC. In 2023, it was the opposition that needed superior strategy to unseat the incumbent. In 2027, it is the APC that must now fight to justify its continued stay in power. Victory is no longer guaranteed by incumbency. It must be earned through credibility, performance, inclusiveness and trust.
For APC to turn the tide and win back the hearts of Nigerians to win the elections fair and square, it must employ a superior and sophisticated strategy beyond the banal ones that it has adopted so far. Given that the opposition of majority of Nigerians to the incumbent is political and not personal, a quick, meticulous and full implementation of certain strategies, policies and practices can likely turn the tide and give the party victory to retain power in 2027.
Without doing the above, in my opinion, no amount of political maneuvering will be sufficient to turn the current negative mindset of Nigerians to vote APC again. The 2027 elections are shaping up to be more than a contest of parties. They will be a referendum on governance. A referendum on fairness, competence and on national direction. For the APC, therefore, the road ahead is no longer one of dominance, but of defense. And unless it adopts a far more sophisticated, superior and sincere strategy than it did in 2023, the outcome may well mark the end of its hold onto power.
