π A Life of Courage and Compassion: Goodwill Message on General T. Y. Danjuma’s 88th Birthday
By Sa'adu Abubakar (Gambe)
To: Lieutenant General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, GCON (Rtd.)
On December 9th, 2025, we join the nation in celebrating the 88th birthday of a genuine Nigerian icon, Lieutenant General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, GCON (Rtd.)—a figure whose life is an enduring narrative of service, enterprise, and compassion.
The Unwavering Leader and Role Model
The subsequent travails that led to the Biafra civil war and beyond are etched in our memories. It was during this period of extreme national crisis that the exceptional leadership qualities of the Great General, then a young officer barely 28 years old, were profoundly displayed. He stood firmly on the side of truth and justice, exhibiting a rare depth of character and moral fortitude that influenced countless young people, including my contemporaries at FSS Lagos: Ahijo Isa Girei, Ahmadu Yero Gurin (later Col. Engineer Ahmad Yero), Raymond Danpurki Dilli, Samson Mshelia, Baba Usman, and myself.
The General was an inspirational and role model for us, his junior brothers from Northern Nigeria. When Lagos became acutely tensed after the second coup d'Γ©tat, military colleagues like General Paul Chabri Tarfa, an alumnus of our alma mater (PSS Yola) and then in charge of Dodon Barracks, offered us protection and essential assistance. General Danjuma, in his pivotal role, helped steer the country during a fragile transition, playing key roles in the subsequent government of General Yakubu Gowon—events we witnessed firsthand as students. He was a forthright, disciplined, and serious military officer whom we, from a respectful distance, idolized despite his heavy call of duty during our studies from September 1965 to June 1967.
π€ A Call for National Unity and Future Greatness
At 88 years, you have done so much for Nigeria. You have done it for Northern Nigeria. And for the Chamba Nation, you are laying the foundation for future greatness. On the mandate of cosmopolitan Nigerians, who cherish unity, progress, peace, harmony, and development, I am pleading with you to lend your wisdom and leadership to all tribes across Nigeria. Your exemplary life calls on all ethnic groups to unite, embrace peace, and work together for the nation's collective advancement.
Your unparalleled achievements serve as a beacon, reminding us all of the importance of disciplined action, integrity, and selfless giving.
May the Almighty God bless you and your family forever. Aamin.
